Bears and DJ Moore Agree to Historic Contract Extension

The Chicago Bears appear to be buying in to the notion that they are going to be a special team in 2024 and beyond. They drafted USC’s Caleb Williams and Washington’s Rome Odunze, and also brought in former Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen and tight end Gerard Everett.

The team already had a superstar pass catcher on the team in perennial wide receiver DJ Moore, who received a historic contract extension on Tuesday.

The Bears and Moore agreed to a four-year, $110 million contract extension that also includes $82.6 million guaranteed.

Adam Schefter reported the news, stating, “DJ Moore and the Bears reached an agreement on a four-year, $110 million extension that includes $82.6 million guaranteed. The deal was negotiated by Drew Rosenhaus, Jason Rosenhaus, and Robert Bailey.”

According to Schefter’s piece, Moore is now the only wide receiver in the NFL who is guaranteed to be paid the first 10 years of his career.

To give more context on Schefter’s report on this historic contract: Moore received a four-year, $110 million extension with $82.6 million guaranteed ensuring that the receiver has three of these four years guaranteed.

Moore was also a standout with the Carolina Panthers and signed a three-year, $61.9 million contract extension in 2022, which guaranteed three years. When Moore was drafted by the Panthers in 2018, he signed a fully guaranteed four-year, $11.7 million contract. This brings his total guaranteed years to 10.

While many other receivers have been getting paid annual salaries that exceed $30 million, Moore is instead banking on the guaranteed money.

Moore has been stellar since arriving in the NFL in 2018. In his rookie season, he secured 788 yards and two touchdowns. He would follow that up with 1,175 yards and four touchdowns in 2019, and 1,193 and four touchdowns in 2020.

In March 2023, the Bears and Panthers pulled off a blockbuster trade that would send the No. 9 overall pick and Moore to the Bears in exchange for multiple draft picks that included two first-round picks. One of which became the No. 1 overall in 2024 and was used to draft Williams.

Moore’s best season to date was in 2023, when he secured 1,364 yards and eight touchdowns.

Moore will now be paired with arguably the best college prospect quarterback the league has ever seen. If Williams shakes out to be what everyone thinks he can be, he is going to be slinging the ball to Moore throughout the 2024 season. With Moore locked up for the next four years, along with Williams, the Bears’ offense could be dangerous for the foreseeable future.
