Bengals’ Joe Burrow Defends NFL Refs, Fires Back at Fans on Social Media
Joe Burrow is not very “cool” right now on social media, as he took to firing some shots on Monday following a weekend of playoff action that had many fans crying foul on some controversial calls.
The superstar quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals weighed in on the debate about what is deemed a catch, following two plays over the divisional round that were called differently.
Instead of going after the NFL refs, as some superstars have recently, most notably Los Angeles Rams wideout Puka Nacua, Burrow defended the officials and called out the fans.

“The amount of [people] that don’t understand what a catch is in the rule book flabbergasts me,” Burrow wrote out on X. “And it’s not the officials. The two plays yesterday were not difficult calls, and they got them both right.”
Although one was on Saturday and the other on Sunday, it is believed Burrow is referring to the controversial interception by the Denver Broncos of Brandin Cooks on Saturday and the non-interception by the Chicago Bears of Rams’ Davante Adams on Sunday.
Cooks went to the ground with the ball and rolled while it was stolen from him, which was ruled an interception. Adams stayed upright and had the ball, but was ripped away from him as he was kneeling to the ground, which was called a reception.
The internet was abuzz over the weekend, wondering why the Bills’ play, which effectively lost them the game, went the way of the defender, while the Adams catch went the way of the receiver.
Burrow has been at the center of drama throughout the last half of the NFL season, and none of it has pertained to his play on the field. The Bengals were one of the first teams eliminated from playoff contention, and whispers about whether an unhappy Burrow could ask for a trade grew by season’s end.
After a few cryptic messages on Instagram, which fans took as possible asks out of Cincinnati and for another team to trade for him, there was no misdirection in his post on Monday.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a Bengals fan or a supporter of another team. You’re probably wrong about knowing the NFL rules, so be quiet, or “Joe Cool” might be coming for you on social media sooner rather than later.
