Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna’s relationship had all the drama of a reality TV show — because, well, it was one.

Their show, Rob & Chyna, premiered on E! in October 2016 and gave fans a front-row seat to their whirlwind romance, public splits, and ongoing co-parenting journey. But behind the cameras, their story was even more chaotic, filled with unexpected twists and made plenty of headlines along the way.

How They Met

Kardashian, 37, and Chyna (real name Angela White), 36, were first linked in January 2016, and their connection quickly became the talk of social media. At the time, Chyna posted a cozy Instagram photo of the two, sparking immediate curiosity about the unexpected pairing. A source revealed to Us Weekly that there was definitely a “romantic vibe” between them.

Their relationship surprised many, not just because of their contrasting personalities, but because Chyna already had ties to the Kardashian-Jenner clan. She was once close friends with Kim Kardashian and welcomed a son, named King Cairo Stevenson, in 2012 with rapper Tyga (real name: Micheal Ray Nguyen-Stevenson), who was dating Kylie Jenner at the time of Chyna and Rob’s initial relationship.

The Roller Coaster Begins

It didn’t take long for Rob and Chyna’s relationship to heat up. By April 2016, just a few months after they started dating, Rob proposed with a massive ring. Chyna’s friend Amber Rose even congratulated the couple, writing, “Congratulations to my Family @blacchyna and @robkardashian!!! Please don’t let nothing or no one tear u guys apart! I never seen my sis so happy and I couldn’t be more happy for her! Sometimes we find love in the strangest places ?”

But the honeymoon phase didn’t last long. A few months later, Rob deleted all traces of Chyna from his Instagram, fueling rumors of trouble in paradise. “Rob and her have been getting into little tiffs and Blac Chyna flipped on Rob,” an insider told E! News at the time. “He was so pissed at how she spoke to him, so he deleted everything about her to hurt her.” The source went on to explain that “Rob has never cheated on her, but she is very paranoid about that from past experiences,” adding, “[They’re] back in love and have spoken through their fight.”

Amid all the drama, the duo announced they were expecting their first child together in May 2016. They shared the surprising news with an Instagram post featuring a baby bump emoji.

In November of the same year, the couple welcomed their daughter, Dream Kardashian, into the world. “Rob and Chyna had the name Dream for a long time,” a source told People. “They named her Dream because they’ve always said she’s a dream come true.”

Rob was over the moon when baby Dream was born and compared her to his late father, Robert Kardashian Sr. “She’s an exact copy,” he captioned a side-by-side snapshot of his newborn and his dad on Instagram. “Pops sent us an angel. It’s truly a blessing. He’s happier than anyone on this day 🙏🏽🙏🏽 I’m so happy and thankful ☺️.”

Breakups and Makeups

However, the arrival of Dream didn’t stop the bumps in Rob and Chyna’s relationship. Just weeks after Dream was born, Rob revealed on social media that Chyna had moved out, taking their baby with her. “Chyna took the baby, took the whole nursery,” he said while showing his empty home on Snapchat and in an Instagram post. “I’m pretty upset and I’m pretty sad, because it’s about to be Christmas, and I wanna be with my baby.” In the caption, he added, “And this isn’t for some ratings, this is my real life.”

But the split didn’t last long. Just a few days later, they reconciled, with sources confirming that Rob apologized to Chyna over the phone. “She was just sick of him and his behavior,” an insider shared with Us Weekly. “She had it with his insecurities and jealousy.”

Their on-again, off-again status continued into 2017, with frequent breakups, reconciliations, and fiery arguments often playing out publicly. The couple even tried therapy to work through their issues.

Legal and Custody Battles

Rob and Chyna’s rocky romance officially ended in early 2017, but the drama was far from over. The two entered a bitter custody battle over Dream, with Rob filing for primary custody in 2020, claiming Chyna was a “danger” to the toddler. Chyna, for her part, denied the allegations and fought back, with her lawyer stating she would “vigorously contest” any attempts to take Dream away.

Their legal issues escalated when Chyna accused the Kardashian-Jenner family for alleged abuse, defamation and cancellation of their E! Series, Rob & Chyna. She alleged that Rob physically abused her, though he has denied the claims. In turn, Rob filed a lawsuit for assault and battery. The mess reached a boiling point in 2017 when Rob posted explicit photos of Chyna online, prompting her to file for a restraining order in July. “Rob u did all this but u beat me up and try act it never happen!!!!!” Chyna alleged in a now-deleted post. “U put hand on me I swear on god!!!! On my kids but I’m supposed to be quiet because you’re a Kardashian.”

Despite their history of courtroom battles, the two eventually agreed to share joint custody of Dream on September 15, 2017, but they didn’t formally follow the agreement. It wasn’t until 2020, when the exes came to a new agreement. Per Us Weekly, court documents read: “Commencing December 2, 2020, and on alternating weeks thereafter, respondent [Kardashian] shall have custody of the minor child from Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. through Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and petitioner [Chyna] shall have custody of the minor child from Saturday at 10:00 a.m. through Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. commencing December 5, 2020.”

In 2022, Chyna made headlines again after she claimed she received no financial support from either of her children’s fathers. Rob quickly clapped back, stating he covered all of Dream’s school, medical, and extracurricular expenses. “I pay 37k a year for my daughter’s school. handle every single medical expense. I pay for all her extracurricular activities. I have my daughter from Tuesday-Saturday. Why would i pay child support lol,” he posted in The Shade Room‘s comment section underneath a screenshot of Chyna’s claims.

Co-Parenting Journey

After years of messy headlines, Rob and Chyna seem to have reached a more civil arrangement for Dream’s sake. Chyna shared in a 2019 interview that communication is key. “It makes it a little bit easier if you can communicate with your child’s other parent. That’s the best and healthiest way,” she said.

While they’ve both taken jabs at each other over the years, they’ve also shown moments of solidarity when it comes to their little one. In 2022, Rob dropped his assault and battery lawsuit against Chyna, saying his love for their daughter outweighed his desire for a public trial.

“My love for Dream far outweighs my desire to proceed with my claims against her mother in a public trial,” Rob told Page Six. “Now that the court has ruled that there is sufficient evidence to warrant a jury trial on my claim for assault, for our daughter’s sake, I am dismissing the action and focusing on my co-parenting relationship with Chyna.”

Last year, Chyna told Today that she and Rob’s co-parenting skills are “great,” adding, “We do have an open line of communication so we can make sure that Dream is taken care of and all her needs are met.”
