Braves Predicted To Sign $3 Million Veteran As Sean Murphy Replacement
The Atlanta Braves are set to be without All-Star catcher Sean Murphy for the next few weeks as the 30-year-old recovers from a cracked rib. With the catcher position being such a physically demanding position, it’s unclear when Murphy will be able to return.
The Braves haven’t added to replace their star catcher yet, but they still have time to do so if they would like to.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently predicted the Braves would sign Baltimore Orioles veteran catcher James McCann. McCann is projected to sign a $3 million deal in free agency, per Spotrac.

“Grandal and McCann, on the other hand, still look like semi-viable backstops. The former has a knack for framing and some pop in his bat, while the latter’s .667 OPS for the Baltimore Orioles in 2024 was halfway decent by catcher standards,” Rymer wrote. “Grandal reportedly turned down an offer from the Atlanta Braves, who have a need for catching after Sean Murphy cracked a rib. Bold Prediction: The Braves sign McCann and keep him for the whole year.”
McCann, 34, slashed .234/.279/.388 with eight home runs and nine doubles across 65 games for the Orioles last season. The veteran backstop is sitting in free agency, likely able to be signed for well less than $5 million.
The Braves need to add some talent and depth at catcher with Murphy on the sidelines for the next few weeks. McCann is a better option than fast tracking prospect Drake Baldwin. Baldwin looks big league ready, but if they rush him to the big leagues, they could stunt his growth.
The Braves would be better off adding McCann until Murphy is back.
