Buffalo Bills Extend Star Pass Rusher Gregory Rousseau

The Buffalo Bills are investing a lot of money into their current defense so far this offseason.

Just one day after signing linebacker Terrel Bernard to a four-year extension worth up to $50 million, the Bills have shored up their defensive line by extending former first-round pick and last year’s leading pass rusher Gregory Rousseau. His contract is reportedly for four years and worth up to $80 million with $54 million guaranteed.

Rosseau led the team in sacks last season with eight. He had arguably the best season of his career in his fourth season, adding two sacks in the postseason. He also had eight sacks in his second season back in 2022.

Before the extension, Rosseau would have been on his fifth-year option after it was picked up last offseason. That meant last year and this coming season were set up to be “prove it” years, but based on this extension, he proved enough in one season in the eyes of the Bills brass.

After reaching the AFC championship game and falling to the Kansas City Chiefs once again, the Bills are sending a clear message that they want to retain the core of their defense.

Bernard is captain of the defense at middle linebacker and the heart of their 4-3 defensive scheme. Rosseau, while doesn’t pop based on his numbers, is the clear best option the Bills currently have at a premium position.

The Bills defense was middle of the pack last year, finishing 17th in yards allowed and 11th in points allowed. The biggest weakness the defense had was yards after the catch, where they ranked dead last in the entire league.

The pass defense as a whole wasn’t up to par for a Super Bowl contender, so the defensive approach this offseason seems like it will be to retain their top defenders and improve the secondary.

An improved secondary should help improve the defense as a whole, something that is clear based on the pass rush numbers.

The Bills defense ranked 10th in the league in quarterback hurries with 57 but ranked just 18th in sacks with 39. They also ranked seventh in hurry percentage.

What those numbers seem to indicate, combined with the awful yards after catch allowed, is the defense was able to generate pressure on the quarterback. However, the secondary struggled to cover long enough to generate more sacks. Add on bad tackling, and teams were consistently turning short passes into long gains against the Bills.

It will be interesting to see how Buffalo addresses the defense going forward, as in order to not lose to Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs for a fifth consecutive time, improvements around their core defenders are necessary.
