Samuel will take his talents to the nation’s capital and look to take the Commanders to the next level after an excellent year for the young Washington team. This deal could be a game changer for the Commanders, who appear excited to welcome the 29-year-old.

Moments after the trade went down, the Commanders had the perfect response to their fans on X for acquiring Samuel.

The gif the Commanders’ social media team used is of the character Deebo from Ice Cube’s iconic 1995 movie Friday. Samuel has been often referred to as Deebo not only because of his nickname but also because of his toughness on the football field.

In return, the San Francisco 49ers are acquiring the Commanders’ fifth-round pick.

The deal will not be processed until the new league year starts on March 12. As part of the deal, the Commanders are taking on the remainder of Samuel’s contract, and paying his full $17.55 million salary for the 2025 season.

According to Jeremy Flower of ESPN, defensive tackle Jonathan Allen was involved in the trade suspension between the commanders and 49ers this week as they executed the Samuel deal.

The chances of Samuel getting traded this offseason were high. After Samuel and the 49ers’ season ended in January, he requested a trade in his season-ending meeting with head coach Kyle Shanahan.

“It was a hard conversation to have with Kyle because of the relationship that we have,” Samuel told Schefter. “But I have to do what’s best. I’m more than thankful for the Niners giving me the opportunity of a lifetime but now I think it’s best that we find another team.”

The 29-year-old has been with the 49ers for his entire career. The team drafted him in the 2016 NFL Draft with the No. 36 pick in the second round out of the University of South Carolina.

Last season, he totaled 51 receptions for 670 yards and three touchdowns over 15 games played. He also rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown. His best season came in 2021, when he made his first and only Pro Bowl and was named to first-team All-Pro.

That season, Samuel tallied 77 receptions for 1405 yards, averaging 18.2 yards per reception, 14 total touchdowns, and 1770 total scrimmage yards.
