Couple Buy Boat as ‘Tiny Home,’ Sail the World Working Remotely With 3 Pets

A couple have shared a glimpse into their exciting lives traveling the world in their tiny home, and internet users have been blown away by it.

Leah Mackenzie from Alberta, Canada, has lived on her boat with her husband, two cats, and dog for eight years, and has traveled to a number of countries around the world in her epic adventure.

The couple started around Vancouver Island, she told Newsweek, heading from there to Alaska. They then spent another few years sailing in the Pacific Northwest.

Then, in 2021, they decided to head to San Francisco and along the Californian coast before spending two years in Mexico.

She told Newsweek: “After that, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama through the canal, Colombia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, St. Martin/Saint Marten, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique, Grenada, Bonaire, Aruba, back to Colombia and now we’re in Panama waiting to transit the canal again to cross to the South Pacific.”

Mackenzie shared a glimpse of her life at sea with her husband and her dogs in the Reddit community r/TinyHouses as u/Godzira-r32. In the post, she shares photos of her cats and her dog, as well as what the inside of her boat looks like, and some of the places they have been lucky enough to visit during their adventure.

“We’ve lived aboard this ‘tiny house’ for 8 years with our 3 pets, slowly traveling the world,” she wrote in the post, which received over 8,100 upvotes and hundreds of comments with people sharing their questions and reactions.

Boating is a popular activity for people around the world, including Americans. According to Statista, the number of registered recreational boating vessels in the U.S. amounted to around 11.6 million in 2023.

Mackenzie said that she and her husband plan to sell the boat next year, which they will list for $150,000.

People were quick to share their reactions to Mackenzie’s post, which was first shared on January 8.

“Super envious! Enjoy it while you can,” posted u/bleepbeepclick.

Another Reddit user, u/Stephenishere, commented: “Living on a boat and traveling world is my dream.” Mackenzie replied to this commenter, saying: “I hope you accomplish your dream! It’s not for everyone and it has very high highs and very low lows. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything else.”

“Ever seen a family with a single parent doing this? It’s a dream I’m working toward with my only major caveat being that I’m a single dad and can’t help but feel like it’s an unnecessary amount of risk without another adult around,” u/zenWolf7 shared.
