Cowboys Player Punished by NFL for Actions During Packers Game

The Dallas Cowboys had a nail-biter of a game against the Green Bay Packers in Week 4, and it ended with a 40-40 tie and two teams pretty frustrated with the outcome.

Now, one Dallas Cowboys player has been punished by the NFL for his actions during that matchup.

Each week during the season, the NFL penalizes players for actions that happened during the previous week’s games. The league updates the list of offenses on its website every Saturday, and a notable Cowboys player appeared on this week’s report.

Defensive end Sam Williams, who has nine tackles, a tackle for loss, and a pass defensed per Pro Football Focus, was slapped with a violation for unnecessary roughness (facemask). He now has to fork over $11,002 to the league.

“If the discipline is upheld, the league withholds the amount of the fine from the player’s next check,” the NFL notes. “If the player’s fine is rescinded, he will receive notification of the decision, and no money will be taken from his check.”

The silver lining for Williams is though his wallet will be $11,002 lighter, it’s going to a good cause. According to the NFL, the money raised from the weekly fines are donated to the Professional Athletes Foundation to “support legends in need and the NFL Foundation to further support the health, safety and wellness of athletes across all levels, including youth football and the communities that support the game.”

No Green Bay Packers players received fines for Week 4.

“Players are notified of violations and may appeal any ruling. Cases are heard by appeals officers and former NFL players, Derrick Brooks, Ramon Foster or Jordy Nelson, who are jointly appointed and paid by the NFL/NFLPA,” the NFL states in their official rules. “The decisions made are final and binding.”

The Cowboys’ next game is against the New York Jets on the road. ESPN analyst Seth Walder has a bold prediction for the game.

“LB Jack Sanborn will lead the league in tackles this week. The Jets are running at an outrageous clip and are currently sporting a league-low minus-12% pass rate over expectation. As only light underdogs to Dallas, they very well could stick with the ground game for 60 minutes, inducing tons of tackling opportunities for Cowboys linebackers.”
