Dachshund Watches Cartoon on TV, Why He’s So Excited Warms Hearts
A moment showing a dachshund wagging his tail while watching a cartoon on TV has gone viral on TikTok, earning more than 15 million views.
The clip features a scene from The Secret Life of Pets, focusing on a character named Buddy—a long black dachshund wearing a golden brown and blue collar. As Buddy appears on screen, a real‑life Dachshund named Bertie can be seen reacting with visible excitement.
Bertie, who appears under the handle @sausagehouse_, starts wagging his tail as the animated dachshund gets his back scratched by a stand mixer in the movie scene. As the moment unfolds, Bertie places his paws on the TV cabinet and stands on his hind legs, seemingly trying to get a closer look while continuing to wag his tail.
Text layered over the heartwarming clip reads “why representation matters,” a phrase typically used to highlight how a lack of media representation of diverse people—across race, gender, ability and background—can negatively affect self‑esteem and identity. In this case, the video playfully suggests the same idea might apply to dogs.
Do Dogs Understand What They’re Watching?
Research shows that dogs do notice and react to TVs, tablets and computer screens, but not in the same way humans do. Studies have found that dogs are most drawn in by familiar sounds such as barking, squeaky toys and human voices, and they tend to prefer watching other dogs on screen.
Because dogs see fewer colors than humans and are more sensitive to movement, fast‑moving images and certain colors are more likely to grab their attention. Still, scientists are unsure whether dogs actually enjoy watching TV. Research suggests dogs usually only glance at screens briefly before losing interest, and what captures their attention can vary widely depending on their personality and past experiences.
TikTok Reacts
Viewers quickly flooded the comments section, with the video racking up 2.6 million likes and nearly 2,000 comments.
“He found his favorite movie,” said one user.
Another wrote: “He really said that’s me.”
“He feels seen,” commented a third.
“My dog loves [The Secret Life of Pets] ! Every time I turn it on, he is in full attention,” shared a fourth.
Bertie isn’t alone when it comes to watching television. Newsweek has previously spoken to the owner of Piper, a border collie mix, who said her dog even knows the word “TV.” However, she added that Piper kicks up a fuss whenever one particular advert comes on.
For many, the clip offers a simple but joyful reminder of how closely dogs can mirror human emotions and how even a cartoon character can make a dog feel seen.
Newsweek reached out to @sausagehouse_ for comment via TikTok. We could not verify the details of the case.
