Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters ahead of Friday’s game that Betts stubbed his toe while at home on Wednesday and was in too much discomfort to play.

He’s headed for X-rays and is considered day-to-day.

Betts has had a trying 2025 season as he transitions to being Los Angeles’ full time shortstop.

Ahead of the team’s Opening Day in Japan, Betts contracted an illness that lasted for multiple weeks and made him lose nearly 20 pounds.

Betts wasn’t able to hold down solid foods, and ended up missing both games in Japan to open the season. He even flew home early.

“My body’s just kind of eating itself,” Betts said at the time. “It’s hard to not fuel it. And so every time — literally, every time — I fuel my body, I throw up.”

Betts was able to rejoin the team for domestic Opening Day, and even got off to a hot start. Since, however, it’s been a struggle for him at the plate.

On the year, Betts is slashing .254/.338/.405 with eight home runs and 31 runs batted in. While his numbers are still above average, for his standards, they’re much lower than usual.

Betts has never had a season with an OPS below .800 (right now his OPS is .742). While he’s been an above average shortstop based on all the advanced metrics, it appears he’s putting a ton of wear and tear on his body to be great defensively. It’s easy to wonder if that has bled into his offense.

Now, Betts is forced to deal with another mini setback, this one involving a toe injury. The X-rays will determine if Betts is able to return to the lineup soon, or if the Dodgers will be without their superstar shortstop for more time.

The Dodgers begin a grueling stretch of 13 games in 13 days against the Yankees, New York Mets, St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Padres, all teams well above .500.
