Dodgers Now Have 5 Ex-Red Sox on Roster After Opening Day Trade
The Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers each started off the season with a win, with the Red Sox defeating the Texas Rangers 5-2, and the Dodgers topping the Detroit Tigers 5-4. But the two teams had something else in common on opening day. They executed an under-the-radar trade.
The trade, which was actually an outright purchase, sent Red Sox right-handed pitcher Noah Davis to Los Angeles in exchange for an undisclosed amount of cash. The Dodgers immediately added Davis to their 40-man roster, and with the move, Los Angeles now has five former members of the Red Sox on that roster — 12.5 percent of the Dodgers 40-man.

Davis was a member of the Red Sox from Dec. 20, when the club signed the 27-year-old as free agent after he was let go by the Colorado Rockies. Davis, a Cincinnati Reds 11th-round draft pick in 2018 out of Santa Barbara, appeared in 18 major league games for the Rockies over three seasons, from 2022 to 2024. In 51 1/3 innings, he compiled a 7.71 ERA.
Though Davis never threw a pitch for the Red Sox, and was quickly assigned to Triple-A Oklahoma City by the Dodgers, he joins eight-time All-Star Mookie Betts, utility player Kiké Hernandez, fireballing reliever Michael Kopech and 38-year-old bullpen pitcher Luis García as members of the Dodgers 40-man roster who have spent time in the Red Sox organization.

Of course, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was member of the Boston Red Sox’s 2004 team that won the World Series for the first time in 86 years. It was a daring stolen base by Roberts in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 4 of the American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees with the Red Sox facing a sweep that forever etched Roberts’ name in Red Sox lore.
Roberts went on to score the tying run in that game, which the Red Sox won in extra innings. Boston then won the next three games, becoming the first and, so far, only MLB team to come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a seven-game postseason series.
Dodgers’ bullpen coach Josh Bard is also a former Red Sox player, catching in seven games for Boston in 2006.
