Dog Helping His Friend Escape Baby Gate Wins Pet of the Week

This week we’ve seen how a dog abandoned at a shelter is now living his best life with a new family and a dog who took serious exception to a fridge magnet.

As well as viral videos and stories about animals, we’ve been working on our weekly Pet of the Week lineup with readers’ videos and pictures.

If you want your furry friend to be a Pet of the Week, follow the instructions at the end of this story.

Winners

Sharon Monell

This week’s winners are two Yorkshire terriers from New Jersey, Bella and Marlee. Owner Sharon Monell shared a heartwarming video of them playing with their safety gate.

In the clip, Monell’s young puppy Bella can be seen helping her older canine companion navigate the gate by opening it for her.

Monell explained that Bella was separated because she was still a puppy, while elderly Marlee clearly felt like she was missing out on the action. Keen to join in the fun, Bella assisted by opening the gate.

“The little one crossed the rainbow bridge in March, but I just thought this video was so cute. I love everything about them. They are my babies,” Monell told Newsweek, reflecting on the touching video.

Finalists

Tot the dog

Peter Zheutlin

Our first finalist this week is Tot, an Australian shepherd mix who was rescued by owner Peter Zheutlin.

“[She is] our fourth rescue from Louisiana,” Zheutlin told Newsweek. “We adopted her when she was about 6 months old.”

Also an author, Zheutlin is passionate about pet adoption. In 2017, he released the book Rescued: What Second-Chance Dogs Teach Us About Living with Purpose, Loving with Abandon, and Finding Joy in the Little Things, which includes short stories and lessons from families who have rescued dogs.

Pepper the dog

Theresa Richardson

Our next finalist this week is Pepper, a shih tzu who lives with owner Theresa Richardson.

Pepper originally belonged to a friend of Richardson’s daughter who was a police lieutenant. In 2014, when the officer had to leave for a business trip and her regular dog sitter was unavailable, Richardson’s daughter volunteered her mother’s services. Richardson had often taken care of her daughter’s dog, so it was a natural fit.

When Pepper’s owner planned a move across the country, Richardson took him in and he has been with there ever since.

“He was 11 years at the time. Before taking him to a shelter, she asked if I wanted him permanently,” Richardson told Newsweek. “I’ve had him ever since. He is now 14, healthy, smart and extremely spoiled.”

Henry the cat
Once feral, Henry is now living his best life.

Leslie Honcharik

Finally this week is Henry, an initially feral cat who now lives his best life with owner Leslie Honcharik.

“He was a feral cat that I fed every day for two years,” Honcharik told Newsweek. “[I] finally managed to catch him and bring him indoors.”

With lots of love and patience, over time Henry transformed from a wary stray to a loving indoor cat who now spends plenty of time cuddled up with his owner.

“[He] has become a big love bug. He’s living the life of a king,” the owner said. “Here he is on his favorite cushion, living the good life he deserves.”
