Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa Doesn’t Plan to Retire, Will Meet With Neurologists Soon

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is scheduled to meet with neurologists this week, but has no plans to retire, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“There is currently no timeline that exists [for his return],” Schefter said. “Tua Tagovailoa will go in search of that this week when he begins meeting with neurologists to get more information about his condition and what is the best course of action for him to move forward. He’s 26-years-old, when he went through this before, he had no desire to retire. My understanding is he still would like to continue playing and doesn’t have any plans to retire. That is going into the meeting with the neurologists which will help give him more information, which will help him make an informed decision.”
In Thursday’s Week 2 matchup against the Buffalo Bills, the Miami signal-caller sustained a concussion in the third quarter of the game. Tagovailoa scampered toward the end zone in an attempt to secure a first down but rushed head-first into the chest of Bills safety Damar Hamlin. Players immediately took a knee as a result of the scary incident.

It was the quarterback’s third concussion of his professional career, which is an unprecedented number for an NFL passer. Tagovailoa sustained two concussions in a multi-week span in 2022.
Tagovailoa is currently at a crossroads. He can choose to continue playing and risk another concussion, or he can hang up his jersey. Either way, Miami isn’t pushing him to make a decision.
“The Dolphins are sitting back and waiting to see what happens with Tua in these meetings and what comes out of them,” Schefter said. “And while I’m sure they’ve had to discuss how to proceed forward, I don’t think they’ve had any significant discussions about replacements for Tua at this point in time.”
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said that Skylar Thompson is the expected starter for their next game against the Seattle Seahawks, indicating that Miami hasn’t made any moves in light of Tagovailoa’s absence.
“I know a lot of people suggested Tom Brady, bringing him out of retirement, that’s not going to happen with Tom Brady going to Miami,” Schefter added.
The Dolphins organization is leaving the decision to Tagovailoa. Miami doesn’t plan on playing a role in persuading the quarterback one way or another.
In the end, the meeting depends on Tagovailoa’s transparency with the doctors this week in helping the signal-caller make the smartest decision.
