Elon Musk Reddit Ban: List of Subreddits Blocking X Links

Some of Reddit’s biggest communities have started to ban content from Elon Musk’s social media site X, formerly Twitter.

Several communities, known as subreddits, have placed restrictions on links to the platform after Musk made gestures during President Donald Trump’s inaugural celebrations that were compared to Nazi salutes.

Newsweek reached out to Musk for comment through SpaceX via email.

Musk has made engagement with internet culture a large part of his personal brand, with sites like X and Reddit being large contributors to that culture. With Musk now a controversial figure online, his prominence within these spaces could be affected as well as his popularity.

What To Know

Sports communities were some of the first to put the ban into place, with a Chicago Bears subreddit and a large F1 subreddit both proposing that no content from X.com be shared on their community pages.

The topic spread to gaming, one of Reddit’s largest topics, with the r/PCGaming subreddit adding Musk’s site to a “domain blacklist.”

“This is something that we’ve been contemplating for a little while now,” moderators told the community.

“X has become increasingly hateful, toxic and less and less moderated. This has, in turn, made us less comfortable with letting our subreddit link it to other people. Not to mention the distasteful things Elon Musk has done recently…”

The r/DND subreddit for tabletop game Dungeons & Dragons made a similar decision, putting the topic to a public vote on whether X should be banned in the community.

r/NAFO, a community supporting Ukraine against the Russian invasion, also debated the topic, with one member writing: “We must ban Twitter/X links and other suspicion platforms like Facebook and TikTok then support alternative platforms like Bluesky.”

Moderators for r/DND said: “Given Musk’s actions on Monday, it may be time to rethink how we engage with the platform. Beyond Musk giving two Nazi salutes, he has repeatedly amplified harmful rhetoric and interacted with accounts promoting Nazi ideology, raising serious questions about Twitter’s role in spreading hate and extremism.”

“Continuing to share links to Twitter content risks contributing to the visibility of a platform that has become increasingly hostile to basic principles of decency and respect. Other subreddits are already considering policies to limit engagement with Twitter, and it may be worth joining this broader effort.”

Elon Musk dismissed the criticisms of his gesture, writing on X: “Frankly, they need better dirty tricks. The ‘everyone is Hitler’ attack is so tired.”

What Happens Next

Musk is preparing to make major changes to the functions of the federal government as the head of the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency.
