Emotional Toddler Watches Mom As His ‘Worst Nightmare’ Unfolds
A busy mom-of-two has shared hilarious footage of the moment her toddler son witnessed his “worst nightmare” playing out before his eyes while he was powerless to stop it.
Kayla, who lives in Florida with her husband Jared and their two kids, regularly posts to TikTok, under the handle @thehappyfloridan, with clips chronicling the challenges of parenting their son JJ, who is nearly 2, and 2-month-old daughter Kenna.
Though she works full-time, Kayla is on maternity leave and, with two kids under the age of 2, rarely gets a chance to catch her breath.
“It’s pretty much a nonstop cycle of feeding, changing, playing, cleaning and attempting to get them to nap,” Kayla, who kept her surname private, told Newsweek. “I usually don’t get a moment to myself until my husband gets home from work or both babies are in bed at the end of the day.”
Though Kayla cherishes the time she has with them and understands “it’s a 24-hour job,” she still strives to find fleeting moments of “me” time for herself.
Given the sense of exhaustion most new parents feel, that’s understandable. In 2022, a survey of 500 parents conducted by the mattress company Snuz revealed 69 percent lost around three or more hours of sleep a night during their child’s first year.
Kayla is currently dealing with two young kids, so any respite she might find in the day is like gold dust. “Sometimes, I need a moment to myself to just decompress; eat a snack without my son trying to take it, even though he has his own; and do what any regular person does,” she said.
Kayla added that’s a common problem with JJ: “He loves to share, aka steal.” That’s how this all started. JJ was outside playing in a special outdoor play area built for him on their porch with his dad, who had just gotten back from work, watching over him.
“I was inside sitting on the living-room floor, playing with our newborn daughter and eating a granola bar,” Kayla said. Her brief moment of respite was shattered, however, when JJ spotted his mom eating inside. “When he saw me eating, he probably wanted a bite, even though he had just finished his lunch,” Kayla added.
Unfortunately, try as he might, JJ couldn’t work out how to open the door to the balcony to enter and get to his mom and her snack.
“I’m not sure whether he was more upset that I was inside eating without him or that he couldn’t figure out how to open the door,” Kayla said. “At first, he was just confused and then he realized he couldn’t get through the glass door, so that’s when he started crying.”
His overly dramatic reaction to being thwarted proved too hilarious for Kayla not to document, so she picked up her phone and hit record, capturing JJ’s “worst nightmare” in the process.
“I kept filming because of the theatrics of it all,” she said. “When it comes to a toddler tantrum, sometimes all you can do is laugh, otherwise you’ll cry. And I do think that is something a lot of moms can relate to.”
She eventually went over to open the door and gave JJ a bite of the bar. “Then he went right back out on the porch,” Kayla said.
Ultimately, Kayla hopes the video helps other moms and dads see they are “not alone” when it comes to the day-to-day grind and that “moms need alone time too, even if it’s just for 30 seconds to eat a granola bar.”
