Falcons Make Decision on Kirk Cousins’ Status Amid Trade Rumors
The Atlanta Falcons made the switch away from veteran signal caller Kirk Cousins at the quarterback position late last season. To replace him, the starting job went to young signal caller Michael Penix Jr.
Cousins has been involved in a lot of trade rumors throughout the offseason and early on in the 2025 season. Quite a few teams could use help at the quarterback position, but Cousins remains on the Falcons’ roster.
While he’s still on the roster currently, there have still been rumblings that he could be moved before the trade deadline. Despite those rumors, Atlanta has not shown much interest in trading him. Now, another update has been shared about the veteran quarterback.

According to a report from NFL insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Falcons currently have no intention of trading Cousins. He will remain as the primary backup in Atlanta behind Penix. She also shared that the New York Giants do not intend to trade fellow veteran quarterback Russell Wilson.
Here is what Russini had to say in her report about Cousins.
“I’m told that the Giants and Falcons have no intention right now of moving veteran backups Russell Wilson and Kirk Cousins,” Russini wrote on X.
So far this season, Cousins has appeared in just one game. He played sparingly against the Carolina Panthers, completing five of his seven pass attempts for 29 yards. Outside of that, he has remained on the sidelines.
Last season in his first year with Atlanta, Cousins played in 14 games. He threw for 3,508 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions, while completing 66.9 percent of his pass attempts. Obviously, the turnovers were the reason that he lost his job.

Even at 37 years old, Cousins is still capable of being an NFL starting quarterback. It’s possible that the Falcons could change their mind as the trade deadline draws closer and open up to the idea of moving him.
All of that being said, expect to continue hearing Cousins being thrown into rumors for teams who need quarterback help. He might have to stick it out in Atlanta, but he still seems like a potential trade candidate if the right offer is made.
