Fewer burglaries in Budapest than ever before
The police want to ensure stable public safety in the capital, free from extremes. This was stated by the city’s police chief, Tamás Terdik, on Wednesday at a meeting of the Budapest Parliament.
Among the most important goals for this year, he listed an increased clearance rate, a reduction in the online crime rate and effective action against drug dealers. In the past year, (online) fraud in particular has increased and the perpetrators are becoming increasingly sophisticated.
The crime statistics for 2024 include 873 domestic burglaries, the lowest number ever. At the same time, the number of all registered offences increased by 28% to just under 52,200 cases. 13,600 offences were committed in public places (+4.5%). The number of homicides fell from 35 to 29, the number of bodily injuries fell by 115 to 1,200 cases, including serious bodily injuries by 60 to 735. 124 criminal offences were committed against small children, 42 cases of people smuggling and 2,250 cases of hooliganism were recorded. The number of thefts increased to 15,200 cases, while fraud involving the use of information technology almost doubled (to 4,800 cases).
The number of accidents on the roads fell by 6.5%, while the number of fatal and serious accidents fell by 25.5%.
On average, the police were on the scene 12 minutes after the emergency call. However, their clearance rate fell by almost five points to 53.4%.
