FM: Attacks against nuclear power plants in Ukraine are ‘unacceptable’
Minister Szijjártó emphasized that both sides strongly supported the US efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said attacks against nuclear power plants in Ukraine are “unacceptable”, and peace is the best guarantee for avoiding them.
The foreign minister held a phone call with the director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Thursday, Rafael Mariano Grossi, who reassured him that although the attack against the Chernobyl power plant had rightly caused concern in Hungary, the sarcophagus of the facility could withstand a much greater blow.
“Therefore, neither after the incident nor since then has there been a threat of a nuclear disaster; all measurements have confirmed that radiation has not increased at all,” Minister Szijjártó said.
“Nevertheless, we agreed that attacks against nuclear power plants are unacceptable, and nuclear safety must be guaranteed,” he said.
Minister Szijjártó also emphasized that both sides strongly supported the US efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
“Peace is the guarantee that provocations and attacks against nuclear facilities can be avoided in the future,” he said.
The minister also expressed appreciation for the staff of the IAEA who, amid the wartime conditions, guarantee the safety of Ukrainian nuclear power plants on site.
