Former New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Joey Gallo is attempting to make a comeback to the big leagues as a pitcher, despite being a two-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner.
Gallo is a 10-year veteran who played for the Yankees, Dodgers, Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins and Washington Nationals. The 32-year-old boasted a lot of power, mashing over 200 home runs in his career, but struggled with making contact, posting a .194 career batting average.
In addition to his prowess at the plate, Gallo was a versatile defender, playing first base, third base, and the outfield. Gallo spent parts of the 2021 and 2022 seasons with the Yankees before being traded to the Dodgers. The 32-year-old last played in the big leagues with the Nationals in 2024.
Gallo joined the Chicago White Sox last offseason but was later released after expressing his desire to transition from a field player to a right-handed pitcher and has been attempting a comeback. Gallo was known for having a cannon in the outfield and reportedly has received interest from several teams earlier this offseason.
As spring training gets underway, Gallo is beginning to throw for teams, according to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman. Though the 32-year-old can throw hard, it will be interesting to see if any teams truly take a chance on him as a reliever over other pitching options.
Gallo has already had a long and successful career, but it would be a great comeback story to see him make a return to the field as a pitcher this season.
