How Did Vikings JJ McCarthy do in Return From Season-Ending Injury?
The Minnesota Vikings engaged in their first preseason game of the 2025 NFL season against the Houston Texans. The biggest storyline for the Vikings is how J.J. McCarthy would do in his return since suffering a season-ending injury a year ago in preseason.

What Happened to JJ McCarthy?
McCarthy was meant to be the backup for Sam Darnold in 2024, but he suffered a torn meniscus following the preseason opener against the Las Vegas Raiders. The young signal caller showcased some great skill, throwing two touchdowns in the game.
The then-rookie quarterback revealed he was experiencing soreness in practice, and it was revealed that he suffered a torn meniscus.
With McCarthy opting for surgery to repair the meniscus tear, it ended his rookie season. He would become the first quarterback drafted in the first round to miss their rookie season due to injury.

McCarthy took the field in the first offensive series of the preseason game of the Texans, and looked to be fully in command of the offense. After a great throw to Jordan Addison, the pair linked up again, with Addison making an incredible diving catch.
McCarthy looked completely comfortable, but the Vikings’ offensive line did not hold up. The second-year passer had to escape the pocket and throw on the run a few times.
Despite moving the chains, including McCarthy scrambling to pick up a first on a fourth down, the drive stalled, leading to a field goal from the Vikings.
McCarthy only played one possession, but put together 4-for-7 attempts, 30 yards, and one rush for eight yards.
Is JJ McCarthy the Starter for the Vikings?
Despite the many rumors that the Vikings were attempting to land Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers, they chose not to bring in either.
McCarthy is the starting quarterback for the team, and he will have a chance to lead the team when the regular season begins. Though he will have arguably the best receiver in the league in Justin Jefferson to throw the ball to, he will be without Addison.
Addison was suspended for the first three games of the season due to DUI charges.
Regardless, McCarthy has been thrust into the role of the starter, especially after the exodus of Darnold, who signed with the Seattle Seahawks. Now, he will get a chance to lead the team.
