The mood may be bleak in the Florida locker room at present, but interim head coach Billy Gonzales has a chance to make the biggest of statements in a rivalry duel against Georgia on Saturday. And what better fixture to make one’s debut as a head coach than in a Cocktail Party fixture where the odds are stacked against his side?
The Bulldogs return to Jacksonville having won the last four editions of this rivalry, establishing another period of dominance that the Gators have struggled to snap. That being said, Florida enters this game directly after a testy win over Mississippi State and hopes to tame another pack of Dawgs at EverBank Stadium this weekend.
And the scope is there for an upset, considering Georgia has trailed at half-time in four of its five SEC fixtures to date this season. Granted, 10th-year head coach Kirby Smart has found the solutions to come back and win three of those, but the fact remains the Bulldogs haven’t exactly bolted out of the gates in those games.
It certainly doesn’t help matters that Gonzales will be without star receivers Vernell Brown II and Aidan Mizell, each of whom has been ruled out through injury. However, a Georgia pass defense that ranks 12th in the SEC (as well as 14th in third-down defense) will offer up its share of opportunities.
