Minnesota has one more hurdle in its sights before moving on to more serious matters in the Big Ten Conference as it travels to California on Saturday. But the ACC’s Golden Bears will be no easy pickings for the Golden Gophers as both teams look to build 3-0 records in Berkeley.
There’s no getting away from the fact that California will be a big step up in competition, especially after last week’s 66-0 trouncing of Northwestern State. There’s also the added caveat that this will be Minnesota’s first road fixture of the season as head coach PJ Fleck prepares to discover some much-needed answers about this year’s team.
California has won the last two meetings between these teams and leads the series 4-2 overall, but neither side has ever managed to win three in a row against the other. Freshman quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele has made waves thus far as the prized jewel of a program that’s been upended from top to bottom over the past year, and Minnesota’s continuity could prove to be the edge in a pressure cauldron atmosphere come Saturday.
