North Carolina’s run through the ACC Tournament ended in disappointment when they lost 74-71 down the stretch to their rival Duke. Still, their miraculous comeback effort in that game might have been what put them over the top in the eyes of the selection committee, and their season is still alive as they look to play spoiler during March Madness.
San Diego State lost to Boise State in the Mountain West Championship quarterfinal, but they were good enough all season long with a 21-9 record to sneak into the NCAA Tournament. They had quality wins over Creighton and Houston early on in the year.
RJ Davis is the player to watch for the Tar Heels. He is a dynamic scorer who can get hot from the three-point line at a moment’s notice. He has led North Carolina with 17 points per game this season but failed to make a three in their last game against the Blue Devils and only finished with eight points. He will look to show the fans he is much better than that, as he has been for much of the season.
The Aztecs will rely on their guard duo of Nick Boyd and Miles Byrd to keep up with North Carolina. Boyd is averaging 13.4 points per game, while Byrd has chipped in 12.6 a night. Boyd scored 20 points on 3-5 shooting from distance in their quarterfinal loss against the Broncos.
