Stanford has had a fortnight to get over a difficult season-opening defeat at Hawaii and is on the road once more as it prepares to step into the cauldron at BYU on Saturday. And the Cougars won’t be willing hosts after a blowout win over Portland State in their own 2025 opener.
Former Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich has had a rude awakening thus far following his migration to the ACC. And Stanford’s interim chief has an even greater task on his hands in getting the better of a BYU outfit that was partly responsible for one of his predecessors losing their job.
David Shaw ended his 11-year tenure as Stanford head coach immediately after the Cardinal’s 35-26 defeat to BYU in its 2022 regular-season finale. That also happened to be BYU’s first win over Stanford and came almost 18 years after their previous encounter.
Fast-forward to today, and Reich hopes to get more out of quarterback Ben Gulbrason after he threw for just 109 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception against Hawaii. BYU QB Bear Bachmeier completed even fewer against Portland State (97 yards) yet managed to throw three touchdowns, not to mention running in for two of his own, as he faces a step up in competition.
