‘Invincible’ Creator Discusses Season 3 Finale’s ‘Walking Dead’ Reunion
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
The Season 3 finale of “Invincible,” “I Thought You’d Never Shut Up,” revolves around arguably the bloodiest and most brutal fight in the series so far, between the titular hero (Steven Yeun) and the Viltrumite warrior known only as Conquest (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).
As fans of “The Walking Dead” no doubt remember, these two actors share another grisly scene in that series when Morgan’s Negan viciously beats Yeun’s Glenn to death with a spiked baseball bat. Things unfold in the opposite direction for the actors this time around, but the question is, was the reunion intentional?

According to “Invincible” creator Robert Kirkman, the reunion wasn’t an intentional one, but it was one he didn’t mind either. Speaking to Variety, Kirkman said, “I’m always trying to find roles for the actors that I know and love and want to work with again. I’m always trying to find something for Jeffrey … At some point, it became, ‘When we get to Conquest, Jeffrey Dean Morgan would be perfect for that.'”

Kirkman went on to say that, if anything, there was some concern that the meta aspect of the reunion would hurt the episode’s integrity. But ultimately it all worked out of for the best.
“You worry about those kind of things taking people out of the show, but once you’re in it and you’re paying attention, it’s not necessarily something that occurs to you,” Kirkman said. “I don’t think it ruins the episode or anything, but I think it enhances things and puts an extra level of stakes on it. For anybody who’s a longtime ‘Walking Dead’ fan, it’s a nice bit of justice.”
The Negan/Glenn reunion wasn’t the only recent reunion on “Invincible” either. Variety brought up that in the penultimate Season 3 episode, “What Have I Done?,” two old friends from “Breaking Bad” have a reunion. Aaron Paul voices the vengeful villain Powerplex, while Jonathan Banks voices the hero Brit. According to Kirkman, it was completely unintentional.
“Well, it’s funny because we just thought Aaron Paul was perfect for Powerplex and that Jonathan Banks was perfect for Brit,” Kirkman recalled. “It didn’t even occur to us that they’re going to be in scenes together and it’ll be a ‘Breaking Bad’ reunion … All that said, I would love for there to be a ‘Wire’ reunion in a future season of ‘Invincible.'”
