Jaxson Dart Makes Noteworthy Leap on NY Giants’ Depth Chart

Heading into this season, the New York Giants will be navigating two separate timelines at the quarterback position. Along with trying to compete with their pair of established veterans, they’ll also be developing a young prospect behind the scenes.

After taking Abdul Carter with the No. 3 pick in the draft, the Giants traded into the end of the first round to nab a QB. They’d end up targeting Jaxson Dart, who is fresh off an impressive senior season at Ole Miss.

In the modern NFL, QB prospects are thrown right into the mix. However, that is not the case with Dart. They’ll be letting him develop behind the scenes while learning from Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston.

Though it’s unlikely Dart will take over the starting role anytime soon, Dart is already making a strong first impression with the Giants. In a recent news roundup for ESPN, Jordan Raanan cited that the rookie finished minicamp taking reps with the second team. Heading into training camp, Dart will be ahead of Jamis Winston on the depth chart.

“Dart had an ‘excellent’ spring, according to Brian Daboll. The coach was especially impressed with the way Dart processed and retained information, confirming why he was a first-round pick,” Raanan wrote. “On his final throw of minicamp, he fired a dart deep down the right sideline for a 25-yard touchdown. It was indicative of the flashes he showed this spring. But there were also indications that he’s a rookie quarterback with plenty to learn, with him holding on to the ball too long at times. Dart began the spring taking reps with the third-team offense. Two weeks in, he was working primarily with the second team, behind Russell Wilson but ahead of Jameis Winston.”

Dart seems to be turning heads for the Giants, which is a big positive for the organization. While Wilson is expected to be the starter this year, he is a stopgap option. Seeing that they traded up to draft him, it’s clear New York views Dart as their QB of the future.

The rookie quarterback has a few weeks of downtime before truly ramping up for his first season in the pros. If he can continue to shine in his reps with the second team, it opens the possibility of him seeing the field at some point this year.
