LA Olympics Add New Golf Competition Fans Have Been Asking For
Golf fans will have an extraordinary opportunity at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles when a mixed team event will be played. The International Golf Federation (IGF) has confirmed the news and provided details on the format and organization of the event.
Olympic golf will be played at the iconic Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, the regular home of the Tiger Woods-hosted Genesis Invitational. The mixed team event will be played over 36 holes with two 18-hole rounds, one in foursomes and the other in four-ball format.
“Golf was incredibly successful at Paris 2024, and as we continue building on the momentum from Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, we’re excited to bring even more attention to our sport through this additional format,” said Antony Scanlon, IGF’s executive director, according to NBC Sports.
“The athletes were very enthusiastic about their desire to play with their compatriots, and we look forward to watching them compete together in Los Angeles.”

Fans are already salivating at the prospect of seeing the likes of Nelly Korda and Scottie Scheffler, Leona Maguire and Rory McIlroy or Charley Hull and Tommy Fleetwood. However, these prospects may face some logistical problems in becoming a reality.
It so happens that the mixed team event will be played after the men’s tournament has finished and before the women’s begins. Considering that the team members must qualify for the individual events, these two additional rounds may be hard to assimilate for any of them.
Therefore, it will be necessary to see which players will accept this extra workload. Another important detail, however, is that the dates of these events have not yet been announced, so it is possible that the organizers will set aside some dates for the players to rest and recover properly.
This initiative is part of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) policy to include mixed events in the Los Angeles 2028 Games. In addition to golf, mixed events will be included in athletics (4x100m mixed relay), archery, gymnastics, rowing, coastal beach sprint and table tennis.
Golf returned to the Olympic calendar in 2016 after being absent since 1908. The sport debuted at the second Games of the modern era (Paris 1900).
While the mixed event in Los Angeles will be a first in its particular kind, it is not the first team golf event in Olympic history. The 1904 Games featured a men’s team tournament in a 36-hole stroke-play format. Three American teams took the medals.
Mixed events are very unusual in professional golf. On the DP World Tour, the Scandinavian Masters is an official event and has been won twice by Sweden’s female star Linn Grant.
The other current coed event is the unofficial Grant Thornton Invitational, which is co-sanctioned by the LPGA Tour and the PGA Tour.
