Longtime Red Sox Pitcher Predicted To Leave Boston For AL East Rival
All signs point toward Nick Pivetta leaving the Boston Red Sox this offseason, but where will the veteran pitcher land?
Pivetta declined a one-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer from the Red Sox in November. Consequently, Boston would receive draft-pick compensation if Pivetta signs with another team.
Some believe the Toronto Blue Jays could be that team.
Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball recently predicted Pivetta to sign a $40 million contract with the Blue Jays. And Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report made a similar prediction on Monday, projecting Pivetta to be a part of Toronto’s starting rotation in 2025.
“The Blue Jays remain a sleeping giant after whiffing in their pursuit of Juan Soto, and while they could focus their efforts on upgrading the offense, there is also a case to be made to add another veteran arm to the rotation,” Reuter wrote.
“Nick Pivetta declined a qualifying offer at the start of the offseason, so signing him will cost a draft pick, but he has swing-and-miss stuff and would add quality depth to a good staff after posting a 4.14 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 172 strikeouts in 145.2 innings last year.”
Boston acquired Pivetta in 2020 via a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Pivetta spent most of his Red Sox tenure as a starter, although he served as an effective multi-inning reliever during the 2021 playoffs and for a long stretch of the 2023 campaign. Overall, the veteran righthander went 37-41 with a 4.29 ERA and 1.243 WHIP across parts of five seasons in Boston.
