Man Wears Same Clothes Since 2005, Internet Reacts With Heartwarming Theory
In an era of fast fashion and ever-changing trends, internet users have hailed a man who hasn’t updated his closet since 2005—and they have a heartwarming theory to explain why.
In a now-viral post, Reddit user u/305tilidiiee shared a picture of their husband’s closet alongside an explanation that he has been “wearing the same clothes” since 2005. Coincidentally, that was also the same year the couple started dating.
The picture shows a range of short-sleeve shirts in various patterns, including striped and chequered garments.
While some might find the idea of wearing the same clothes for over two decades unusual, many Reddit users have hailed this man’s sustainable approach to fashion. In the days since the post was shared online, it has gone viral with over 6,200 votes and more than 470 comments on Reddit so far.
Newsweek has contacted u/305tilidiiee via Reddit for comment. We could not verify the details of the post.
Trusted U.S. spending data suggests that most Americans replace their wardrobes far more frequently than this man does. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that households spent an average of $655 on women’s apparel, $406 on men’s apparel, and between $87 and $96 on children’s apparel in 2023. Footwear accounted for an additional $208 for women and $147 for men, demonstrating how clothing costs can quickly add up annually.
Additional industry research shows that the average American spent approximately $2,041 on clothing and services in 2023, with survey data indicating an average of $1,445 per year on clothes and shoes alone—equivalent to roughly $120 per month. These figures highlight just how atypical it is for someone to maintain the same wardrobe for more than 20 years.
In the days since the Reddit post went viral, many people have taken to the comments to share their thoughts. Indeed, some even suggested there could be a heartwarming reason as to why he hasn’t bought new clothes since 2005, theorizing that it was the best year of his life as he met his spouse.
Among the hundreds of responses on the post, one comment reads: “There’s a Seinfeld joke about how a man stops buying new clothes during the best year of his life. Just gonna ride out the year he met you forever. Congrats.”
Another Reddit user wrote: “Sustainable king.”
A third person replied: “That’s impressive. Clothes nowadays aren’t made to last that long.”
Others jested about the return of Y2K fashion, which means his 21-year-old closet is back in style: “Good news, the 2000s are back in fashion so no need to change it now!”
