Matthew Perry ‘Worried’ Mom With ‘Not Frightened’ Comment Before He Died

Matthew Perry’s mom has revealed the star told her he was “not frightened anymore” in a conversation before his death, and that it “worried” her.

The Friends actor died in October 2023 at the age of 54, triggering an outpouring of grief from family, fans and costars.

Five people face charges over his death, caused by the acute effects of ketamine, with drowning and coronary artery disease listed as contributing factors.

Almost a year later, Perry’s mom Suzanne Morrison has opened up to Today‘s Savannah Guthrie, and told her in a moving interview that the conversation with him was almost like “a premonition.”

“He went through a period interestingly enough, just before he died, when he was showing me one of his new houses. He came up to me and said, ‘I love you so much and I’m so happy to be with you now.’ It was almost as though it was a premonition or something,” Morrison says in a preview clip.

“I think there was something … there was an inevitability to what was going to happen next to him, and he felt it very strongly. But he said, ‘I’m not frightened anymore.’ And it worried me,” she adds. “I didn’t think about it at the time but I thought, ‘How long has it been since we’ve had a conversation like that?’ It’s been years.”

The full interview with Morrison and other members of Perry’s family will be unveiled on October 28, marking a year since the actor died.

Perry, who had been open about battling substance abuse problems during his life, was found unresponsive in the Jacuzzi in his backyard on October 28. Although deemed accidental, his death was investigated, and an assistant, two doctors and an alleged drug dealer have been charged.

The actor, who rose to global fame playing Chandler Bing in Friends, was the only child of Morrison and her ex husband, actor and former model John Bennett Perry.

Morrison, who used to be press secretary to former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, tied the knot with Dateline correspondent Keith Morrison after splitting from Perry’s father. They had four children together—daughters Caitlin, Emily and Madeleine and son Willy.
