Mets’ High-Potential Prospect Might Be Key To Huge Trade

The New York Mets have been one of the more aggressive teams in baseball over the last few months, and that’s unlikely to change ahead of the trade deadline.
With the deadline quickly approaching, the Mets could look to swing a few big trades to acquire the talent it would take to steal the National League from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
FanSided’s Tim Boyle recently suggested former top prospect Luisangel Acuña could be a trade chip for the Mets to use when they look to bring in big league talent this season.

“Regardless of whether they put together a monster package or look to trade expendable pieces for big league help, it’s Luisangel Acuña who feels most likely to rent an apartment somewhere else,” Boyle wrote. “Acuña was recently demoted by the Mets in favor of having journeyman Travis Jankowski on the roster. Acuna was barely playing beyond late pinch-running opportunities and some defense for the final outs.
“The Mets have made it abundantly clear they are more intrigued by what Ronny Mauricio can offer them. With the demotion, the final minor league option is on the verge of being officially burned through as long as Acuña remains in the minors long enough. Acuña for a bullpen arm? It’s a realistic outcome.”
With the Mets needing a few bullpen arms as well as a starting pitcher, Acuña’s spot in the system isn’t safe. The Mets could look to flip him for any number of players, potentially trading him in a one-for-one deal if the return is right.
Acuña is extremely talented, but the Mets have other top infielders who are getting the chance to prove themselves while Acuña has to sit and wait. With him being at the back of the line, he could be the first name mentioned in upcoming trade rumors.
