The New York Mets looked destined for the postseason and beyond this year, but they fell flat on their faces down the stretch. New York wasn’t able to hold onto the final wild card spot in the National League as the Cincinnati Reds clinched the postseason berth over New York on the final day of the regular season.
The Mets need to put together a successful offseason to avoid this same disappointment next year, but they’re going to be fighting an uphill battle to do that. Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonso are both headed toward free agency, and they could bolt from Queens in the offseason.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today recently predicted the Mets would lose Alonso in free agency to the Boston Red Sox.
Alonso is likely headed for a large contract this winter, which will limit his suitors. Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently predicted Alonso would sign a deal worth $182 million in free agency.
The Red Sox will certainly be able to afford a contract like this, too. Boston could be caught up chasing Alex Bregman, but there’s a chance that the front office coughs up the money to sign both Bregman and Alonso.
The Red Sox are going to need to make some big moves if they want to close the gap on the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East. Running it back with the same roster might not be enough. An addition like this will help in a huge way.
