Megill being shut down likely ended any chance of him returning this year, but the situation is reportedly even worse. The Athletic’s Tim Britton revealed that he is “likely headed for Tommy John surgery,” which would end next season for him before it even starts.
“Tylor Megill is likely headed for Tommy John surgery, which would knock him out of the 2026 season,” wrote Briton. “Megill is receiving additional opinions before finalizing his decision.”
Megill and the Mets had hoped his injury was something that would heal without surgical intervention. However, needing surgery is a brutal setback that could impact the Mets next year.
Megill had a 2.50 ERA through his first seven starts this year. He finished the season with a 3.95 ERA. He is under club control through 2027, and the next time he takes the mound for the Mets may be in a contract year.
