Michael Vick Adding Former NFL Star to Norfolk Coaching Staff: Report
As the dynamic star quarterbacks of the modern era such as Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts gear up for the Super Bowl, the revolutionary who made a name as the first true running quarterback threat prepares for his inaugural season as Norfolk State’s head football coach.
Former NFL star Michael Vick is adding noted names with illustrious resumes to his staff.
Tory Woodbury, who both played and coached with a handful of NFL teams, has officially signed on as Norfolk’s special teams coordinator per FootballScoop.

Woodbury played for the Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, New Orleans Saints, and New York Jets before embarking on a long coaching career, which included helping the Los Angeles Rams win a Super Bowl three years ago.
He carries five seasons’ worth of NFL coaching experience along with almost a decade at the collegiate level.
Woodbury served as the tight ends coach and special teams coordinator for the Howard Bison in 2024 and also has experience coaching as an offensive coordinator.
Vick was named Norfolk State’s head coach on December 23, marking his first head coaching role. The Spartans are coming off a 4-8 season and have gone 9-25 since 2022 under Dawson Odums.
“I was talking to my high school coach a couple weeks ago, and I told him I wanted to be a football coach one day, a couple years from now,” Vick said at his introductory press conference per ESPN.

Vick had shared that he received an unexpected call from former Virginia Tech player Aaron Rouse, now a Virginia state senator, along with Norfolk State athletic director Melody Webb, who inquired about his interest in becoming the Spartans’ head coach.
“It wasn’t the easiest decision to make,” Vick said. “I’ve got family that I considered, I care about and I love. This requires a lot of change in lifestyle. But at the same time, it allows me to serve young men in my community.”
Vick led Virginia Tech to the national championship game as a redshirt freshman and was drafted No. 1 overall by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2001 NFL Draft.
The former NFL MVP finalist and Pro-Bowler has been hitting the ground running in recruiting for Norfolk State, landing players like former Kennesaw State QB James Woods III, former USF QB Israel Carter, former Pitt DE David Ojiegbe and former UTSA DT Nick Booker-Brown.
Vick and his staff are set to officially kick off on Thursday, Aug. 28, when the team hosts Towson in its 2025 season opener.
