Millennial Woman Has Relatable Response to People Mentioning Their Husband
It’s a moment that stops millennials and Gen Zers in their tracks—hearing a woman their age casually mention “my husband.”
One TikTok user, Brenna Berg, 27, has gone viral for capturing the disbelief that hits when a fellow young woman drops the H-word in conversation. Since the video was posted, it has received nearly 18,000 likes and over 600 comments. Berg spoke to Newsweek about what makes her squirm when hearing the word—and revealed a secret in the process.
“Am I the only person that when you hear somebody say their husband…I’m like, ‘What husband?'” she said in the video. “I thought we were having boyfriend. Like, what do you mean, your husband? It sounds…it’s, like, so official and so adult.”

Berg explained why the term “husband” feels so jarring, even at an age at which many of her peers are already married.
“My knee-jerk reaction to young women having husbands is shock,” she said. “It seems silly, but I think a lot of women and people in general still feel younger than they are…I think to myself ‘You’re 20 years old and have a husband?'”
That’s not to say she isn’t thrilled about marriage, though—Berg revealed that she herself got engaged in late November. But even as she prepares for her wedding, she admitted the word still feels surreal.
“I am so excited and love [my fiancé] with all my heart, but it still does feel weird that I soon will be one of the women who says ‘husband,'” she said. “I think it just goes back to not really feeling my age at times. The word husband feels very mature and adult.”
The trouble with labels
The conversation in Berg’s comment section has only confirmed that she’s far from alone in this feeling.
“I have received [a] ton of affirmation in the comments from women who feel the same exact way, and even women that are married themselves talking about how odd it feels to call their partner their husband,” she said. “It has nothing to do with them being married and having a husband, but just the word itself not really rolling off the tongue.”
And it’s not just “husband” that feels off—many women find themselves grappling with labels at different relationship stages.
“I feel it can be the same when you are a late 20s-and-beyond person who feels funny calling their partner their ‘boyfriend’ because it feels juvenile,” Berg said. “I am also struggling with calling my partner now ‘fiancé’ because it feels to me a little bit pretentious. It’s just the words themselves that take some getting used to!”
With marriage on the horizon, Berg knows she’ll soon be dropping the word “husband” in casual conversation herself—but for now, she’s still wrapping her head around it.
