Minister Balázs Hankó: Hungary is a family-friendly country
The minister emphasized that the principle is not to live off one’s children but for one’s children. Over the next four years, families will retain 4,000 billion forints in tax allowances and personal income tax exemptions, which can be used for the advancement of their children and will strengthen the entire Hungarian economy.
So far, thirty different measures have supported families in Hungary, and new ones are being added. As of July 1, the government increased the family tax allowance by 50 percent, while maternity, parental, and adoption benefits became tax-exempt. On October 1, mothers of three children will be exempted from personal income tax, and from January 1, mothers under 30 with one child will also be fully tax-exempt. The system will gradually extend to mothers with two children, starting with those under 40. The minister added that the second 50 percent increase in the family tax allowance will also take effect in January.
For a family with three children, the October income tax exemption means 109,000 forints per month, or 1.3 million forints per year. From January, the doubled family tax allowance will add another 99,000 forints monthly, totaling 208,000 forints per month, or 2.5 million annually. Combined with existing benefits, the support will leave 307,000 forints with families monthly—3.7 million per year. Hankó stressed this is such a significant amount that alongside tax-exempt mothers, fathers will also enjoy substantial allowances.
The minister pointed out that families must fill out advance tax declaration forms to claim the benefits, but they can also enforce them retroactively during tax filing. Since 2010, the government has gradually introduced family-supporting measures, granting 4,400 billion forints in tax allowances over 15 years. In the next four years, another 4,000 billion forints in tax relief will follow. Hankó underlined that, unlike Brussels and the Tisza Party, which not only promote pro-migration policies but also plan to abolish family tax benefits through tax hikes, the government is firmly committed to keeping them.
According to Hankó, while the government supports families with 307,000 forints per month, the opposition’s proposed “Tisza tax” and elimination of tax benefits would not only cancel this support but would also take away an additional 340,000 forints.
Commenting on the protest organized by independent MP Ákos Hadházy—where demonstrators disrupted a mass at the church on Ferenciek Square and clashed verbally with an 82-year-old friar—the minister said Hungary has clung to Christian faith and culture since the time of Saint Stephen. He stressed that even through centuries of turmoil, Christian identity provided strength.
Regarding the disinformation scandal connected to the Szőlő Street juvenile correctional facility, in which false claims of pedophile politicians were spread, Hankó called it a work of “the evil raging in the world.” He said those who launched the smear campaign had ties to foreign agents and were trying to destroy a nation’s honor.
“Those involved must be held accountable, and we must ensure that such a thing can never happen again. The truth must come to light,” the minister declared.
