Mysterio Family Pays Tribute To Late Rey Misterio Sr.
On Dec. 20, the professional wrestling world mourned the loss of Rey Mysterio Sr. at 66 years old.

Misterio’s influence on professional wrestling can’t be overstated, especially given the amount of legendary wrestlers he has trained.
This includes his nephew, WWE icon Rey Mysterio and members of the Mysterio family took to social media to pay tribute to Misterio Sr.
Aalyah Mysterio, Rey Mysterio’s daughter, honored her late uncle in an Instagram story.
“Eternally grateful for you Uncle,” Aalyah said, per WrestlingWorldCC. Without you, my dad wouldn’t be the person or fighter he is today. Rest in Peace uncle.”
WWE Superstar “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio also paid tribute to Misterio Sr. with multiple posts on Instagram, first sharing photos of his uncle inside the ring.
Dominik then shared a compilation video of Misterio Sr. in action accompanied with the caption “Q.E.P.D. Tio,” which translates to “RIP Uncle.”
“We regret the sensitive death of Miguel Ángel López Días, known as Rey Mysterio Sr.,” Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide said in a statement on social media (translated from Spanish).
“We send our most sincere condolences to his loved ones and raise our prayers to heaven for his eternal rest.”
Real name Miguel Ángel López Díaz, Misterio began his professional wrestling career in 1976. He would continue to wrestle until 2009 when he officially retired.
Misterio became a wildly popular luchador in Mexico, appearing in promotions like Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, Pro Wrestling Revolution, Tijuana Wrestling, and World Wrestling Association (WWA).
Additionally, Misterio appeared in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1990 alongside Konnan during Starrcade as part of the “Pat O’Connor Memorial International Cup.”

During his career, Misterio won many championships, including the IWC World Middleweight Championship twice, the America’s Championship, the Tijuana Welterweight Championship, and the WWA World Junior Light Heavyweight Championship.
Misterio also won the WWA Tag Team Championship with his nephew, Rey Mysterio, and the Revolution Tag Team Championship with his son, El Hijo de Rey Misterio.
Misterio trained multiple wrestlers who went on to have impactful and long-lasting careers, including Rey Mysterio, El Hijo de Rey Misterio, Konnan, Psicosis, Halloween, and Damian 666.
Misterio was inducted into the Tijuana Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. Despite retiring in 2009, he wrestled his final match in 2023.
