New energy bridge planned between Hungary and Serbia
Mavir Zrt. and the Serbian grid operator EMS signed a cooperation agreement on Friday for the construction of a second 400 kV transmission line between Sándorfalva and Subotica (Szabadka) in Serbia.
The investment is part of the intergovernmental agreement of June 2022 and contributes to the fulfilment of European energy policy goals. The new international transmission line will increase cross-border capacities between the two countries and improve system flexibility.
On the Hungarian side, a 20 km long single line is being built, which can later be expanded into a double line. In addition, a new transformer field will be installed at the Sándorfalva substation. On the Serbian side, the construction of a 28 km transmission line and further internal grid expansion work is planned. The next step is an agreement on concrete implementation, which should be signed by autumn 2025 at the latest. Commissioning of the new international line is scheduled for the end of 2028. This will further strengthen the energy infrastructure between Hungary and Serbia.
