NFL Analyst Cites Key Element in Terry McLaurin Trade Saga

Heading into the 2025 season, the Washington Commanders have a major dilemma on their hands. After weeks of failed negotiations, they remain at odds with a key component of their offense in wide receiver Terry McLaurin.

McLaurin, who is in the final year of his contract, has desired a long-term extension. However, he and the Commanders haven’t been able to work out an agreement that keeps him in Washington.

There have been two major roadblocks when it comes to extension talks. Coming off a fifth straight 1,000-yard season, McLaurin feels he deserves a deal similar to some of the other top talents at his position. On the other side, Washington is wary about paying a receiver who is getting ready to turn 30 a sizable contract.

Though McLaurin ended his holdout and arrived at training camp, his frustrations are still apparent. Last week, reports emerged that he requested a trade from the Commanders.

Despite the fact that this ordeal has dragged on through training camp, the Commanders’ stance has not changed. They remain intent on keeping McLaurin and aren’t open to trading him yet.

In the event things do reach a worst-case scenario, one analyst brought up a key element the Commanders have to keep in mind.

While on Good Morning Football last week, Kyle Brandt gave his thoughts on the Commanders and McLaurin. If they ever changed their stance on a trade, he noted they can’t take a deal that would leave Jayden Daniels empty-handed in year two.

“Terry McLaurin is a good player, but Jayden is the company,” Brandt said. “If you think in any that we just can’t come to a deal with Terry, we love him, I think we got this great offer here…we can’t leave the cupboard bare for Jayden or we risk having him step back. I feel like McLaurin’s best leverage isn’t that I’m a nice guy and a good player, it’s that I’m the No. 1 wide receiver for the quarterback Messiah here in D.C.”

Fresh off a dominant rookie season, Washington bolstered the supporting cast around Daniels to keep him on the path towards stardom. However, if they aren’t able to work things out with McLaurin, it will all end up being for not.
