Number of tourist arrivals by 2 percent


In September 2024, 1.5 million guests spent nearly 3.6 million tourism nights at tourist (commercial, private and other) accommodation establishments1. The number of arrivals was 2.0% and tourism nights 1.1% higher than a year earlier. The number of nights spent by domestic guests fell by 4.2% (partly due to the difference in weekend days) and international tourism nights grew by 5.8%. In January-September 2024, domestic guests spent 1.7% and international guests 8.7% more tourism nights in tourist accommodation establishments than in the same period of the previous year.

In September 2024, the number of arrivals and tourism nights spent in tourist accommodation establishments grew by 2.0% and 1.1% respectively. 71% of tourism nights were at commercial accommodation establishments, where turnover was 1.5% lower than a year earlier. Private and other accommodation establishments registered 7.7% more tourism nights than a year earlier.

The number of domestic tourist arrivals fell by 5.0% and that of domestic tourism nights by 4.2% compared to the same month of the previous year. 737 thousand domestic guests spent 1.6 million tourism nights in tourist accommodation establishments, within which commercial accommodation establishments registered 541 thousand tourist arrivals and nearly 1.2 million tourism nights. 71% of the latter were spent at hotels, where the number of tourism nights was 0.5% higher than a year earlier. The number of domestic tourism nights spent at private or other accommodation establishments was down by 1.8% compared to September 2023. The number of domestic tourism nights increased the most in the Győr–Pannonhalma tourism area2 (by 8.8%) and decreased the most in the Pécs tourism area (by 13%) compared to the same period last year. The number of nights spent by domestic guests in tourist accommodation increased by 3.8% in Budapest and decreased by 5.8% at Lake Balaton.

The number of international arrivals increased by 9.7% and international tourism nights by 5.8% compared to the same month last year. The 767 thousand international guests having arrived at tourist accommodation establishments spent nearly 2.0 million tourism nights there, of which commercial accommodation establishments registered 539 thousand guests and almost 1.4 million tourism nights, respectively. 82% of the latter were spent at hotels, where the number of international tourism nights was 6.6% higher than a year earlier. The number of international tourism nights spent at private or other accommodation establishments grew by 16% compared to September 2023. The number of international tourism nights increased most in the Gyula region (by 17%), while the Bük and Sárvár tourism area saw the largest decrease (by more than 17%) compared to the same period of the previous year. The number of international tourism nights spent in tourist accommodation establishments increased by 15% in Budapest and fell by 9.8% at Lake Balaton, which may have been negatively affected by the flood situation.

A total of 27,851 tourist accommodation establishments, within which 2,764 commercial and 25,087 private or other accommodation establishments welcomed guests.

Of commercial accommodation establishments, 998 hotels and 1,121 boarding houses were open for part or all of September.

The total gross sales revenues of tourist accommodation establishments amounted to nearly HUF 97 billion, which was 20% higher at current prices than a year earlier.

Széchenyi Recreation Card was used by cardholders to spend HUF 2.7 billion, 11% more at current prices, at tourist accommodation establishments compared to the same month of the previous year.

In January-September 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year, tourist accommodation establishments registered a total of 35 million tourism nights, up 5.0%.

Domestic guests and international guests spent 1.7% and 8.7% more tourism nights respectively (17.9 million and 17.1 million) in tourist accommodation establishments.
