Pete Alonso Makes Eye-Opening Change on Social Media Regarding Mets Future
The New York Mets failed to sign Pete Alonso to a long-term deal last offseason. However, the team has another chance this offseason.
Alonso reportedly wants at least seven years on his next deal. He agreed to join the Mets on a short deal with an opt-out after he was unable to find a deal to his liking last offseason. After playing even better this year, he should be able to land a long-term deal. He is beloved by Mets fans, and losing him would be a huge blow.
Alonso will be even more expensive now than he was a year ago, and MLB insider Ken Rosenthal thinks David Stearns does not want Alonso in Queens long-term. If that is true, Mets fans may be in for a sting when Alonso gets a deal from a new team. Alonso is already giving Mets fans an idea of him leaving.
Alonso changed his profile picture on Instagram from a picture of him in a Mets jersey to a picture of him in a Florida Gators jersey. Alonso has spent his entire big league career with the Mets since he was drafted in the second round of the 2016 MLB June Amateur Draft from the University of Florida.
Alonso has been a key part of the Mets’ success. However, if Stearns does not see him as a long-term piece, he will likely be playing elsewhere. His changing his profile picture could simply be a leverage play showing the Mets he is open to leaving. He has spoken highly of the organization and seemingly wants to stay. However, he wants to be paid what he wants as well.
Alonso’s latest social media move may not mean much. However, it at least shows the team he is not as attached to the Mets as they may seem. He is going to make sure he gets the deal he wants, even if it comes from some other team.
