Pete Alonso To Red Sox? Top MLB Insider Provides Update On Sweepstakes
With Triston Casas reportedly on the trade block, the Boston Red Sox might want to go in a new direction at first base.
Could Pete Alonso be an option?
USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale turned heads this week when listing the Red Sox as possible suitors for the star free agent.
“There currently are eight teams showing at least some interest in Alonso, including the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox,” Nightengale wrote Tuesday. “But in the game of first base musical chairs where 11 teams have a new first baseman, Alonso is left standing.”
However, MLB insider Jon Heyman sang a different tune Wednesday during his “B/R Walk-Off” stream.
“Right now I don’t think that’s too likely,” Heyman said of a potential deal between Alonso and the Red Sox.

Alonso, 30, is coming off another solid season that saw him earn his fourth MLB All-Star Game appearance. The veteran slugger hit .240 with 34 homers and a .788 OPS while playing in all 162 games for the New York Mets.
At this point, it seems more likely that Boston opens the 2025 season with either Triston Casas or Rafael Devers at first base.
Multiple reports indicate the Red Sox are interested in trading for third baseman Nolan Arenado or signing fellow third baseman Alex Bregman. In either case, Devers could be moved across the diamond to replace Casas, who also has been named in trade rumors throughout the offseason.
