‘Pirates Are Failing Paul Skenes,’ MLB Insider Claims Following Opening Day Dud
The Pittsburgh Pirates are one of the most intriguing teams in the league this season. They have one of the most talented players in the league at the top of their rotation in Paul Skenes. Down the board, they have Mitch Keller, Jared Jones (when healthy), and a plethora of other talented pitchers.
On a recent episode of “The Baseball Insiders” podcast, FanSided’s Robert Murray claimed the Pirates are failing Skenes because of their lack of spending this offseason.

“The Pirates are failing Paul Skenes. They have such an opportunity here with Skenes, with Jared Jones, with Bubba Chandler coming up as well,” Murray said via “The Baseball Insiders” podcast. “They have this window here with all three of these guys signed cheap, and yet, this offseason they really didn’t end up doing much at all.”
Murray hits the nail right on the head here.
Pittsburgh has Skenes under team control for the next few seasons. Whether the Pirates will be able to afford a contract extension when he hits free agency is irrelevant to the current moment. While the Pirates have Skenes under team control, they need to spend money to bring in the offense that can help them win.
A pitching staff with a trio of Skenes, Jones, and Bubba Chandler isn’t something the Pirates will see again in the near future, especially with all three of them early less than $5 million per season combined.
Bob Nutting and the Pirates’ front office need to spend the money to put a solid team around this pitching staff, or else the Pirates will look back on the Skenes era in the Steel City and kick themselves in the behind for never winning anything meaningful.
