Plane Passenger Looks Down Aisle—What He Notices Man ‘Hiding’ Stuns

A plane passenger has turned to netizens for advice after deciding not to report a fellow traveler for vaping during a recent flight.

The original poster (OP), user SiouxHawk, recounted the incident on Reddit, explaining that he had noticed a man seated down the row and across the aisle lean his head into his open coat and inhale from a vape.

“He did a pretty good job of hiding it,” the OP noted, though he added that he caught “a waft of pina colada occasionally during the rest of the flight.”

The OP said he observed the man vaping several times and was now wondering whether he should have reported him to a flight attendant.

“Maybe the guy was super anxious about flying, and this settled him down,” he wrote. “Otherwise, he seemed to mind his own business.”

Still, he questioned whether staying silent meant he was “putting others at risk and complicit in not saying anything.”

Reddit users weighed in via the comments, with one remarking, “It’s so sad to see how many people just can’t put down the vape for a flight, like, come on, people. On top of it breaking federal regulations.”

Another user identifying as a flight attendant weighed in more firmly: “Yes, you should have notified a Flight Attendant, as not only was that passenger breaking a Federal Aviation Regulation, but the fumes emitted off the vape could have affected sensors and the cabin’s air.”

“Report,” one commenter wrote, adding, “If you can’t stop vaping for the duration of the flight, you shouldn’t be flying.”

Rules on Vaping

Federal rules prohibit the use of electronic smoking devices on aircraft.

The Federal Aviation Administration states, “Just as passengers are not allowed to smoke cigarettes on an aircraft, they should never use their vapes or e-cigarettes on an aircraft. It’s not only dangerous, it’s a federal offense.”

The agency also warns that electronic smoking devices contain lithium batteries that pose a fire risk and must be packed in carry-on luggage.

Enforcement can carry financial penalties, and according to a Newsweek report, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) can fine passengers who are found vaping up to $1,771.

Newsweek has reached out to Grahamreaper12 for comment via Reddit. We could not verify the details of the case.
