Rams’ Matthew Stafford Gets Major Injury Update From Adam Schefter

The Los Angeles Rams are currently in the midst of training camp, but they have been doing so without quarterback Matthew Stafford. Stafford is currently dealing with a back issue, and that has brought plenty of worry from fans and pundits alike.

Despite Stafford not suiting up thus far in training camp, NFL insider Adam Schefter has provided a major update on the situation.

“I don’t think it’s ideal when your quarterback hasn’t practiced yet in training camp and it’s the first week of August, but my understanding is that it’s a total maintenance issue. Yes, he has had some back discomfort, and he has had some pain. 37 years old.

“But they don’t want to put him out there, they don’t want to put and wear and tear on his body. He knows how the game works, he knows how the offense functions, he knows how his teammates think and operate. They are intentionally keeping him out … my understanding is that if the Rams had a game today, Matthew Stafford would be playing without a question,” Shefted stated.

Stafford is 37 years old and has spent plenty of time in the league, but it does sound like he is not being rushed into practicing to ensure he will be healthy for an entire 17-game season and more. The Rams also kept most of their team intact through free agency, though they swapped Cooper Kupp for Davante Adams.

Adams, like Stafford, is a pro who has experienced many seasons in the league. His experience alone perpetuates a level of confidence that he would likely not need to build a huge rapport with Stafford. The pair would likely need minimal time to get on the same page offensively.

The Rams were one of the biggest surprises in 2024, putting together a big season after starting off 1-4. The offensive line was ravaged, and Stafford paid dearly for that by taking a bunch of hits.

Despite the rough start, the Rams handily beat the Minnesota Vikings in the Wildcard Round, but were bested by the Philadelphia Eagles in the Divisional Round. The Eagles went on to win the Super Bowl.

Still, the Rams possess a solid core, including Stafford. Though he might need some extra time off to make sure he is healthy for all of 2025, that shouldn’t be a major concern.

The Rams will still be a contender in the NFC once the regular season rolls around.
