Ranking Randy Orton’s 10 Worst WWE WrestleMania Matches

Randy Orton has been in a lot of WrestleMania shows. Because he’s been around for so long, he’s wrestled at more WrestleMania events than most other wrestlers. Even when he’s been hurt, he’s still managed to compete at 19 different WrestleMania’s.

His WrestleMania matches have been a mix of really good and really bad. Some were amazing, while others were considered some of the worst ever. He’s fought against some of the biggest and best wrestlers at WrestleMania, which has led to many important matches.

10. Randy Orton vs. Triple H vs. John Cena

In 2008, John Cena’s Royal Rumble win didn’t lead to a WrestleMania title shot against Randy Orton. Instead, they fought at No Way Out, with Cena winning by disqualification. Triple H then earned the WrestleMania title match, and Cena was added back into the mix after defeating Orton. Their WrestleMania 24 triple-threat match, while not a classic, was still a solid contest between three top stars, though it felt a bit rushed.

9. WrestleMania 34

Ten years later, Randy Orton’s United States Championship win led to a four-way match at WrestleMania 34, after Jinder Mahal, Bobby Roode, and Rusev got involved. This match, despite having talented wrestlers, felt less important than it should have. The booking of the title wasn’t strong, and the decision to have Mahal win, rather than the popular Rusev, disappointed the crowd. This illustrates how even with big names, a match’s impact can be lessened by poor storytelling and booking.

8. WrestleMania 20

Randy Orton’s early feuds included a violent rivalry with Mick Foley in 2003, where he even kicked Foley down some stairs. Foley then got involved in Orton’s matches, leading to a big tag team match at WrestleMania 20. This match was exciting because it featured big stars like The Rock, Mick Foley, and Randy Orton, giving younger wrestlers like Orton and Batista a chance to shine against older legends.

7. WrestleMania 38

Years later, Orton, along with his partner Riddle (RK-Bro), won the tag team titles and defended them in a fast-paced match at WrestleMania 38. This match was a fun opener, with all the teams showing off their skills. Even though everyone knew RK-Bro would win, the crowd still went wild for the finishing moves.

6. WrestleMania 28

Orton also had a strange rivalry with Kane. After Orton beat Kane in a fight, Kane felt weak for shaking Orton’s hand. This led to Kane interfering in Orton’s matches, and their WrestleMania match was considered boring by some fans, especially in the first half.

5. WrestleMania 25

The fight between Randy Orton and Triple H got really intense before WrestleMania 25. Orton won the Royal Rumble, which made Triple H angry. Then, Triple H won the WWE Championship, and Orton wanted revenge because Triple H had kicked him out of their group years before. Triple H also wanted to get back at Orton for hurting his wife. Even though the buildup was exciting, their main event match at WrestleMania was really boring. It wasn’t a terrible match, but for a big WrestleMania main event, it was a huge disappointment. Orton didn’t even win, which felt like a waste of time.

4. WrestleMania 26

Later, Orton’s group, Legacy, started to fall apart. Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase messed up Orton’s chance to win the title, and then DiBiase hit Orton with a pipe in a match. This led to a three-way fight between them at WrestleMania. Orton became a good guy, and Cody and Ted teamed up against him. The match was okay, but the ending was bad. WWE could have made Cody or Ted a bigger star, but instead, Orton won easily. The match wasn’t very exciting, even though the ending was good.

3. WrestleMania 37

Orton also had a strange and bad match with Bray Wyatt, who was using his “Fiend” character. They had a weird “Firefly Inferno” match, and then another one at WrestleMania. This WrestleMania match was considered Orton’s worst. The whole story was confusing, with magical stuff happening, and the match itself was boring. The ending, where Alexa Bliss turned on Wyatt, didn’t make any sense and was never explained.

2. WrestleMania 35

Edge’s unexpected return to WWE in 2020 led to a short reunion with Randy Orton, his old tag team partner. But Orton turned on Edge, attacking him and his wife, Beth Phoenix. Their match at WrestleMania 36 was a long, 40-minute fight, but the empty Performance Center made it feel strange and lacked creativity. While it was cool to see Edge wrestle again, the match was too long and didn’t quite work because of the pandemic.

1. WrestleMania 33

Orton also had a strange alliance with Bray Wyatt, joining his group, the Wyatt Family. They even won the tag team titles together. Later, Orton won the Royal Rumble, and Wyatt won the WWE Championship. Orton then turned on Wyatt, leading to a match at WrestleMania 33. This match was a bit better than the one with Edge, but it still had some odd moments. Wyatt used “magic” to show gross images on the ring, which was meant to be scary, but ended up looking silly. Orton won the match and the championship, his first WrestleMania title win.
