Record fines for traffic offences
Last year, the transport authority imposed fines totalling 4.5 billion forints (just over 11 million euros) on vehicles involved in road freight transport and passenger transport.
Of the 9,000 offences involving trucks, buses and vans registered in 2024, 99% were committed by foreign drivers. More than a quarter of the offences detected related to the weight and dimensions of the vehicles.
A particular problem is the so-called ‘horror caravans’, in which overloaded and technically defective vans that are ‘misused’ as trailers for used cars jeopardise road safety. Driving licence and registration offences accounted for over 10% of all offences. The number of offences relating to the technical condition of vehicles and drivers’ driving and rest periods also remains high. The number of offences in so-called cabotage traffic, in which foreign transport companies carry out domestic transport operations, is on the rise.
