Connor was engaging in a run when he was rolled under two big 49ers defenders, and his leg appeared to be trapped under all the weight. The telecast only showed the injury one time, which led to him having to be carted off the field.
The Cardinals have yet to confirm the severity of the injury, but it is feared to have been season-ending.
A source told ESPN that they assume James Conner’s right ankle injury is severe enough to end his season but an official prognosis hasn’t been made yet.

Josh Weinfuss of ESPN revealed that sources have indicated that the right ankle injury Connor suffered is season-ending. This has yet to be confirmed, but the way that the Cardinals’ back was carted off the field pointed to things being very serious.

Conner has had a resurgence in his career since joining the Cardinals, as he has gone over 1,000 rushing yards in the 2023 and 2024 seasons. There was a strong belief he would have eclipsed that amount in 2025 as well.
Conner had nine carries for 22 yards before the injury took place. He also secured 95 carries and a touchdown through three weeks of action.
Losing Conner will be tough for the Cardinals, and that was already evident in his absence during the loss to the 49ers. In Conner’s absence, Trey Benson picked up 42 yards on the ground.
Quarterback Kyler Murray also had 37 yards on the ground. Had Conner been available, the Cardinals may have been able to sneak away with a win. Instead, they fell to the 49ers with a final score of 16-15.
Arizona will release more information as it comes out, but signs are pointing to Conner having suffered a season-ending ankle injury.
