Robert De Niro Faces MAGA Fury Over Stephen Miller Nazi Comments
Robert De Niro is facing fury from MAGA after he said that President Donald Trump’s top aide, Stephen Miller, is a “Nazi,” during an appearance on MSNBC’s The Weekend.
Newsweek has reached out to a representative for De Niro via email and filled out a contact request form with America First Legal, co-founded by Miller, for comment outside of regular working hours.
Why It Matters
De Niro, 82, has long been a critic of Trump and was one of many Hollywood stars to endorse former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 Presidential Election.
MAGA and conservatives have long shared criticism of celebrities who support Democrat politicians or liberal politics more broadly. This rhetoric has been apparent online, after millions of Americans, including many high-profile celebrities, took to the streets for “No Kings” protests over the weekend, a mass mobilization aimed at opposing President Donald Trump’s administration and what participants describe as his authoritarian tendencies.
The Goodfellas’ star’s remarks come amid inflamed political rhetoric in the U.S. and intense political divisions, following the assassination of conservative political activist and Turning Point USA founder, Charlie Kirk.
What To Know
During his MSNBC appearance, De Niro said that Trump will force himself into a third term in the White House, something that has been speculated on by many people.
“We see it, we see it, we see it … all the time—he will not want to leave. He set it up with … I guess he’s the Goebbels of the cabinet, Stephen Miller. He’s a Nazi,” De Niro said, comparing Miller Joseph Goebbels, who was the Nazi Party’s chief propagandist.
“He is and [Miller’s] Jewish, and he should be ashamed of himself,” De Niro said.
These remarks have sparked a furious response from MAGA and conservatives online. Media personality Eric Daugherty of Florida’s Voice wrote on X that “this is the kind of rhetoric that incites violence,” in a post viewed over 800,000 times, while Andrew Kolvet of Turning Point USA wrote on X, “The only one who should be ashamed is Robert De Niro.”
Miller has played a pivotal role in shaping and promoting Trump’s hard-line immigration policies, something which has been criticized publicly.
While there has been vocal backlash and criticism of De Niro’s remarks, people have also shared posts on social media supporting his comments.
What People Are Saying
Andrew Kolvet, Turning Point USA spokesman on X: “Make no mistake, when deranged elderly lunatics go on TV and shout “Nazi” and “Fascist” to smear conservatives like Stephen Miller, they are trying to get them killed. The only one who should be ashamed is Robert De Niro.”
Eric Daugherty, a media personality, on X: “Conservatives are demanding a retraction from Hollywood liberal Robert De Niro for claiming “Stephen Miller is a Nazi.” “Yes, he is. And he’s Jewish. He should be ASHAMED of himself.” This is the kind of rhetoric that incites violence.”
Bill Madden, a singer-songwriter, on X: “What Robert De Niro is saying is common opinion throughout Europe and the democratic free world. Stephen Miller is a Nazi, FULL STOP.”
Paul Mauro, a Fox News contributor, in a post on X: “De Niro either has no conception of history, or he believes Miller, who is Jewish, supports the Holocaust. This is just unhinged. Enough with the N word. You lost an election. You could win the next one. Grow up.”
What’s Next
Miller has not publicly responded to De Niro’s remarks as of reporting.
