More news: Rams’ Latest Signing Could Point to Major Repeated Issue From 2024 Season
Akers spent the first four seasons of his career with the Rams, as he was drafted in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Florida State.
During his rookie season in 2020, Akers secured 625 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, 123 receiving yards, and one receiving touchdown. He appeared in 12 games, and started five.
After a promising first season, Akers would unfortunately tear his Achilles during training in July 2021. Though it was believed that he would be sidelined for the entire season, he miraculously healed, leading to his being added to the active roster on Dec. 25, 2021.
Akers would make his Super Bowl debut in 2021, securing 13 carries for 21 rushing yards and three receptions for 14 receiving yards when the Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20.
Akers would then have a resurgence in 2022, rushing for 786 yards, nine touchdowns, and added 117 receiving yards to that.
The 2022 season turned dramatic as Akers requested a trade during Week 5. The Rams did not allow the trade to happen, and he would sit for two weeks, later stating he did not request a trade.
Following the conclusion of the 2022 season, Akers was in line to be the starting running back for the Rams. However, shortly into the start of the 2023 season, he was replaced by rookie Kyren Williams.
The Rams would eventually trade Akers to the Minnesota Vikings. He would suffer an Achilles injury during the 2023 season, leading to his only appearing in six games.
Akers signed with the Houston Texans for the 2024 season, but was once again traded to the Vikings after spending five games in the AFC South. He was used sparingly in the final 12 games of the 2024 season, racking up 297 rushing yards, one touchdown, 59 receiving yards, and two receiving touchdowns.
Now, Akers is set to join the Saints in what could be his chance to rotate alongside Alvin Kamara. What’s interesting is that there have been plenty of rumors regarding Kamara and a trade happening.
So far, Kamara is being traded are only rumors. However, the Akers signing could be a look at things to come for the Saints.
